Posterior urethral valves diagnosed by bedside ultrasound in the ED.
Posterior urethral valves are the most common cause of urinary obstruction in male children. Presentations of posterior urethral valves beyond the neonatal period include urinary tract infection, abdominal mass, renal failure, diminished urinary stream, crying during micturition, incontinence, dysuria, hematuria, or failure to thrive. Early diagnosis is imperative because early surgical relief of...
متن کاملDiagnosis of appendicitis by bedside ultrasound in the ED.
BACKGROUND Computed tomography (CT) has largely become standard of care for diagnosing appendicitis at the expense of increased patient radiation exposure, cost, and time to surgical intervention. To date, there are very limited data on the accuracy of bedside ultrasound (BUS) for the diagnosis of appendicitis in adults. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to evaluate test characteristic...
متن کاملUltrasound-guided abdominal wall nerve blocks in the ED.
INTRODUCTION The anterolateral abdominal wall is innervated by the T7 to L1 anterior rami, whose nerves travel in the fascial plane between the internal oblique and transversus abdominus muscles, known as the transversus abdominus plane (TAP). Ultrasound-guided techniques of regional anesthesia that target the TAP are increasingly relied upon by anesthesiologists for pain management related to ...

Results We report the case of a 72 year old patient with prior stroke without sequelae and hypertensive, with abdominal pain of 7 days duration, high fever and bilious vomiting. Physical examination was marked hypotension (80/45 mmHg), distal coldness, pallor and sweating, 38.5 ° C, 145 spm. The distended abdomen with abolished peristalsis and positive Murphy right upper quadrant. Rest without ...
متن کاملNovel use of ultrasound in the ED: ultrasound-guided hematoma block of a proximal humeral fracture.
Proximal humeral fractures are a common injury after falls, particularly in the elderly population. An ultrasound-guided hematoma block is a novel technique for analgesia in cases when standard intravenous analgesia is not efficacious. We present a case in which ultrasound-guided hematoma block was the ideal method for adjunctive pain control in a patient with a comminuted humeral head fracture.
